The Full Story

From Screen To Stage
Before taking flight as a publishing brand, Hummingbird first grew its wings as a stage play in the West End of Glasgow- although not the first written, it was our Founder's first to be put on in person after starting her writing career during the Covid Pandemic. Placing as a finalist for a New Writing Competition, Hummingbird became a symbol of reinvention and opportunity.
The Great Unknown
After graduating with six stage plays under her belt, like many young creatives, our Founder moved away from her theatre community and struggled to find opportunities to continue writing. After taking a year out from academics, she was accepted onto a Masters course in Writing For Performance at the University of Cambridge. Here, she was introduced to not only a wider range of writing genres, extending her creative portfolio, but a larger pool of creative career opportunities.

It was during this period that Hummingbird was revisited; not as a stage play, but alternatively as a Radio Drama.

Returning To The Screen
After many conversations regarding community and outreach, Hummingbird's wings grew its finalised shape- a publishing company, dedicated to providing accessible publishing and writing opportunities for emerging, amateur writers, regardless of location or experience; building an invaluable community in the process.

In order to honour this new beginning, our first playwriting anthology was aptly named: Strangers From The Start. And thus, our new Hummingbird took flight for the first time.
